Play

5 09 2008

While in Paris, the summer before last, I happened to see an exhibition honoring the work of Samuel Beckett and much of the work based on his writings. In one room they had the version of Play directed by Anthony Minghella playing on a loop. I did not know much about Beckett at the time other than what I had picked up from an English major friend. None the less, Play had me very intrigued, maybe even haunted me slightly… That’s a stupid exaggeration, but I found it fascinating none the less. Over the last month or two though I’ve been thinking more about it and my interest in the underlying themes he presents. Also for sometime now I’ve been wanting to take multiple monitors or screens to construct a larger piece but broken into private quadrants all with an underlying theme in colors… I need to develop this more, sketch it out and start getting footage together… I don’t just want to repeat the film of Play but maybe rather create a digital Purgatory for them to inhabit indefinitely, or until the plug gets pulled out.

I feel all awkward writing on this, all serious like, but its been awhile since I’ve posted anything… Anyway, my roommates seem very interested in helping me set this up, so I’ll be posting any progress I make. I guess the real difficult part is getting enough monitors and dvd players…
